Organic Livestock Production

Organic Farming Practices:

  • Feed: Animals must be fed organic feed, free from synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and GMOs. Pasture grazing is essential, with rotational grazing practices to maintain soil health and reduce disease risk.
  • Health Management: Emphasizes preventive health care, including vaccination, parasite control, and the use of natural remedies. Antibiotics and synthetic medications are only used as a last resort.
  • Housing: Animals must have access to outdoor areas, with ample space for natural behaviors. Housing should be designed to minimize stress and provide comfort.
  • Breeding: Focuses on natural breeding methods, avoiding the use of hormones or other artificial reproductive technologies.

Certification:

  • Standards: Organic livestock production must adhere to standards set by certifying bodies like the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) in India or international bodies like USDA Organic.
  • Inspection: Farms are inspected annually to ensure compliance with organic standards. Records of feed, health care, and breeding practices must be maintained.

Short Point-Wise Notes:

  • Feed: Organic, pasture-based.
  • Health: Preventive care, minimal synthetic drugs.
  • Housing: Outdoor access, stress reduction.
  • Certification: Follow organic standards, regular inspections.
