Grooming:

  • Brushing and Washing: Regular brushing removes dirt and loose hair, stimulates blood circulation, and improves coat condition. Washing should be done a few days before the show to allow the animal’s coat to regain its natural oils.
  • Hoof Care: Hooves should be trimmed and cleaned to ensure the animal can stand and move comfortably. Cracked or overgrown hooves can disqualify an animal.
  • Clipping and Shearing: Dairy cattle, sheep, and goats may require clipping or shearing to enhance their appearance. The clipping should highlight the animal’s conformation and be done uniformly.

Training:

  • Walking on a Lead: Animals should be trained to walk calmly on a lead, following the handler’s cues. This training is crucial for both cattle and goats.
  • Standing Still: Teaching the animal to stand still in the correct posture is essential for showing. Practice sessions should mimic show conditions to acclimatize the animal.

Health Checks:

  • Vaccination and Deworming: Ensure the animal is up to date on vaccinations and deworming treatments to prevent disease outbreaks during the show.
  • Diet and Nutrition: A balanced diet should be provided in the weeks leading up to the show to maintain optimal body condition. Special supplements may be used to enhance coat condition.

Short Point-Wise Notes:

  • Grooming: Brushing, washing, hoof care, clipping.
  • Training: Walking on a lead, standing still.
