Problems:

  • Low Productivity: Traditional practices and limited access to modern breeding techniques result in lower yields of milk, meat, and eggs. The average milk yield per cow in India is much lower than in developed countries.
  • Disease and Health Issues: Frequent outbreaks of diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Brucellosis, and Mastitis impact productivity and lead to economic losses. The availability of veterinary services is often inadequate, particularly in rural areas.
  • Feed and Fodder Shortage: Insufficient availability of quality feed and fodder limits the growth and productivity of livestock. Decreasing grazing lands due to urbanization and deforestation exacerbate the problem.
  • Infrastructure Challenges: The lack of cold storage facilities, efficient transportation, and modern slaughterhouses leads to post-harvest losses and reduces the quality of animal products.
  • Environmental Impact: Overgrazing, improper waste management, and methane emissions from ruminants contribute to environmental degradation and climate change.

Prospects:

  • Genetic Improvement Programs: Initiatives like the National Dairy Plan aim to improve the genetic quality of livestock through artificial insemination, crossbreeding, and selective breeding programs.
  • Technological Integration: The adoption of precision farming, digital tools, and biotechnology can enhance productivity, disease management, and overall efficiency in the sector.
  • Government Support: Schemes like the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, National Livestock Mission, and Livestock Health and Disease Control Program provide financial and technical assistance to farmers, promoting sustainable livestock farming.
  • Expansion of the Dairy Sector: With increasing demand for dairy products, there is significant potential for growth in milk production, processing, and value-added products like cheese, butter, and yogurt.
  • Export Potential: Enhancing the quality standards and expanding market access for Indian livestock products, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, could boost exports.
