Aman Sehrawat wins gold at U-23 World Wrestling Championships :-

Aman Sehrawat created history by becoming the first-ever Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at U-23 World Wrestling Championships in Spain’s Pontevedra. The 18-year-old defeated Ahmet Duman of Turkey 12-4 in the 57-kg category final. Aman was the lone Indian male freestyle wrestler to get a visa and compete in the tournament. India finishes with six medals in total with one gold, one silver and four bronze despite fielding a depleted team owing to visa issues.

John Shaw, husband of Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, passes away :-

John Shaw, husband of Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, died Monday. He was 73.He had served as vice chairman of the company and had stepped down last year citing health concerns. His cremation was held at the Wilson Garden crematorium in Bengaluru Monday evening.John Shaw had served as a foreign promoter of the company and was a member of the board of directors of Biocon since 1999. He was born in 1949 and was a postgraduate from Glasgow University.


Rishi Sunak becomes UK’s first Indian-origin PM :-

Sunak defeated centrist politician Penny Mordaunt, who failed to get enough backing from lawmakers to enter the ballot, while his rival, the former prime minister Boris Johnson, withdrew from the contest saying he could no longer unite the party. Sunak, one of the wealthiest politicians in Westminster and set to be the country’s first leader of colour, will be asked to form a government by King Charles, replacing Liz Truss, the outgoing leader who only lasted 44 days in the job before she resigned.


World’s largest diya lit up in Punjab’s Mohali :-

The world’s largest diya was lit up in Punjab’s Mohali amid Diwali festivities. More than 10,000 people contributed 3,560 litres of oil for an event to light up the diya made with 1,000 kilograms of steel. The diya, which was recognised as the world’s largest by the Guinness World Records, measures 3.37 metres in diameter. Hero Homes in Punjab’s Mohali witnessed a world record activity – lighting of the world’s largest diya installed at the premises. It has been manufactured with approximately 1,000 kg of steel.


Sudarsan Pattnaik creates Goddess Kali’s sand art with installation of 4,045 diyas :-

Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a 5-foot-high sand art of Goddess Kali by using 4,045 diyas with the message, “Let us burn out all the negativity,” at the Puri beach in Odisha. Recently, Mr. Patnaik constructed a magnificent sand sculpture at Puri beach in Odisha wishing Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday. Mr Patnaik displayed his unique way of greeting the Prime Minister, who turned 72 on 17 September. His installation consisted of 1,213 earthen tea cups.


PM Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali in Kargil with the soldiers :-

Keeping his Diwali tryst with the soldiers alive, Modi landed in Kargil amid chilling cold to celebrate the festival of lights with the soldiers. Last year he celebrated Diwali in Nowshera border town of J&K`s Jammu division. In 2020, he shared the joys of the Diwali festival with soldiers in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.In 2019, Modi went to Rajouri district in J&K on Diwali while in 2018 he was in Uttarakhand to celebrate Diwali with the Army and ITBP soldiers. In 2017, the Prime Minister celebrated Diwali with the BSF soldiers in Gurez border town of J&K.


Haryana govt declares 50% VAT rebate for industrial units using natural gas :-

The Haryana government has decided to give a 50 per cent rebate in the Value-Added Tax (VAT) to industrial units that replace diesel generator sets with natural gas. The scheme will be applicable to all industries, including micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises, and effective for two years from the date of its notification. The scheme will be applicable to entire industry including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The use of diesel-powered generator sets is banned in the national capital region.


Ayodhya sets Guinness World Record as nearly 16 lakh diyas lit :-

Ayodhya, the Land of Lord Rama, has entered the Guinness Book of World Records by lighting up 15.76 lakh. The grand celebration was held on the occasion of Chotti Diwali at Ram Ki Paidi on the banks of the revered Saryu River. There were 19000 volunteers who made sure that the event was a success. A total of 17 lakh earthen lamps across 37 ghats of Ram Ki Paidi were lit. But the Guinness Book of World Records only took those diyas into consideration which remained lit for five minutes or more.


K.P. Ashwini appointed as Independent Expert on racism :-

K. P. Ashwini became the 1st Indian to be appointed Independent Expert on racism and related intolerance. K.P. Ashwini, a Dalit scholar whose roots are in Kurabarahalli in Kolar district, has been appointed Special Rapporteur for United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC). She is the first Indian and Asian woman to be appointed to this post.The Geneva-based 47-member UN human rights body has endorsed Dr. Ashwini’s appointment. She is the first Asian as well as the first Indian to be appointed for the post.


US President Biden hosted White House’s biggest-ever Diwali celebration:-

US President Joe Biden hosted Diwali celebrations at the White House and said, “This is the first Diwali reception of this scale in the White House ever to be held. Vice President Harris said, the Biden administration joins over 1 billion people around the world to light the ‘Diya’ and celebrate the fight for good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and light over darkness. Moreover, First Lady Jill Biden praised the Asian American community in the US for “helping us light our way forward.”
